Carrefour buys Greenweez, bio leader on Internet

Thursday, July 28, Georges Plassat, the CEO of Carrefour Group, on the occasion of the presentation of the group results for the first half 2016, confirmed the purchase of the site Greenweez, the leader of organic products on the Internet.

 

Georges Plassat said the buyback was carried out « four days ago » but did not release the amount of the transaction.

Established in 2008 – the same year that the site Bioaddict.fr with which it has also become a partner – and based in Annecy, the pure player Greenweez bet early on bio and soon became the leading e-commerce platform on the market.

Greenweez now has more than 30 000 products and 900 brands , across 10 world: home, children, cooking and grocery shopping, outdoors, health and wellness, cosmetics, fashion and energy. Its turnover is 20 million euros in 2015, 80% in the food. 90% of this turnover is generated in France but also Greenweez book in Germany, the Netherlands , Luxembourg, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Belgium.

This year Greenweez had planned to launch a fresh categories, and ultra-fresh fruits & vegetables, and open a chain of stores to complement its web offers. The purchase by Carrefour should accelerate the implementation of these projects.

According to Agence Bio , in 2015, the organic market has doubled since 2008, reaching a turnover of € 5.8 billion, up nearly 15% . And this growth is intensifying in 2016. Direct sales rose 20% from 2014, 17% of organic specialty shops and craftsmen-traders 15% to large food stores (11%). Today ‘hui French 9 of 10 (89%) consume organic, at least occasionally , while they were still only 54% in 2003. 65% of French people consume regularly, at least once a month, against 37% in 2003. the consumption of organic products in the home is estimated at almost 3% of the total food market at home. The development potential is so huge. Carrefour, which opened its 5th store specialized bio Carrefour this year, and strongly expanding its product offering bio under its own brand (in its stores and on its website www.ooshop.com ) today confirmed its desire to progress on this growing market with the acquisition of Greenweez.
